Transabdominal Pelvic Ultrasound

How it’s done:

âžœProbe is placed on the lower abdomen

âžœRequires a full bladder for clearer images

What it shows:

âžœUterus size and shape

âžœOvaries

âžœLarge masses or fibroids

âžœFree fluid in pelvis

Common reasons:

âžœPelvic pain

âžœAbnormal bleeding

âžœInitial pelvic evaluation

âžœMonitoring known fibroids or cysts

Transvaginal Ultrasound

How it’s done:

âžœA thin probe is inserted into the vagina

âžœEmpty bladder needed

What it shows (very detailed):

âžœEndometrial lining

âžœOvarian cysts

âžœEarly pregnancy

âžœFibroids

âžœSigns of infection or ectopic pregnancy

Common reasons:

âžœIrregular or heavy periods

âžœInfertility workup

âžœPelvic pain

âžœPostmenopausal bleeding

Sonohysterogram

How it’s done:

âžœSterile saline is placed into the uterus

âžœThen a transvaginal ultrasound is performed

What it shows:

âžœUterine cavity shape

âžœPolyps

âžœSubmucosal fibroids

âžœScar tissue

Common reasons:

âžœAbnormal uterine bleeding

âžœInfertility

âžœRecurrent miscarriage
